The Deep Dive

1. “From the buildings in which we live and work, to the cars we drive, or the knives and forks with which we eat, everything we use was designed to create some sort of marriage between and .”

2. The folks at IDEO state that they are not experts in any given area. But, they do claim to be experts on the process of how you design stuff, which they apply to the innovation of consumer products.

3. After the team of designers is brought together, told the problem, and informed they have five days to “pull it off,” what phase of the design process do they immediately engage in?

-The team defines what the problem they are trying to solve and researched their product.

4. Give two examples of what the team members did during this phase.

a. They gathered information on the shopping cart and how it is designed.

b. They asked people on their opinions and how they feel about the shopping cart.

5. List five rules-of-thumb that IDEO employees follow when they share ideas during the brainstorming phase:

a. One conversation at a time
b. Stay focused
c. Encouraged wild ideas
d. Differ judgement
e. Build on the ideas of others

6. Why should wild (and sometimes crazy) ideas be entertained during the brainstorming phase?

- So that they can come up with more ideas and can come up with things that you probably wouldn't think of.

7. After the brainstorming phase was over, the team narrowed down the hundreds of ideas by voting for those ideas that were not only “cool” but also buildable in a short period of time. What phase of the design process is this called?

-This part of the design process is explore possibilities and to research and generate ideas.

8. IDEO believes that the ideas and efforts of enlightened trial and error will always be more successful than the planning of a lone genius.

9. Once the ideas were narrowed down and divided into categories, the group was split into four smaller teams. What phase(s) of the design process was each of these groups responsible for?

-The design phase the groups were working on was to select an approach and to develop a design proposal, and to model and prototype their own ideas.

10. The leaders at IDEO believe that crazy and quirky behavior and a team environment are two important reasons why their employees are able to think quickly and creatively to produce innovative results.

11. Sometimes, people come up with great solutions that work by trying their ideas first, and asking for opinions later.

12. Design is often a process of going too far and having to take a few steps back. What phase of the design process would the critique of the four mock-ups come under?

-The design process that this applies to is refining and commucating results.

13. Upon critique of the four teams’ models, it was obvious that none of the teams had developed an optimum solution. However, the people at IDEO believe that it is important to fail often in order to succeed sooner.

14. What percentage of the entire week’s time did it take to fabricate the final prototype?

They spent about 5 days working on the prototype.

15. Instead of showering his design team with a tremendous amount of praise, what did the boss require his employees to do with their new design?

Test it out and see what improvements they can make with their products.

16. Of all the things that we are surrounded by every day, what has not been placed through the design process?

I can't really think of one material. Everything in our classroom has been through the design process. One thing, however, would be the air around us.

Conclusion

1. What did you find to be the most impressive part of the team’s effort?

How dedicated each group was and how much fun they were having.

2. What advantages are there to having a design team with members that have non-engineering backgrounds?

They can think of some great ideas that can come from other fields they have worked in.

3. There was a point in the process where a self-appointed group of adults stepped up, stopped the ideas, and redirected the group to break up into teams. Why was this done?

To come up with other ideas and to bring all these different ideas together once they are finished.

4. At the end of the video, Dave Kelly states, “Look around. The only things that are not designed are the things we find in nature.” Can you think of anything that would contradict this statement?

Animals, plants, and fruit have been mixed so now we have different types of them.

Reverse Engineering: Mechanical Product - Visual Analysis

Using a camera phone, digital camera or your laptop's webcam, take pictures of your product that correspond to a multi-view drawing (top, front, side).
Top

Side

Front

Visual Analysis
Describe the visible design elements and principles in relation to the three images of the product.
-This laptop was plainly designed, so it was designed for people who don't really care about the color of their computers.
-Doesn't weigh too much

Functional Analysis
What is the purpose of the product and how does the mechanical nature of the item support that?
-The product was designed to be able to be carried around everywhere you go, unlike a desktop computer which can only be left at your home.
-You can watch videos, take pictures, and listen to music.
-Download your favorite things on websites
-Browse the internet

Analyze the target audience/demographics
-This was meant for anyone, and it isn't aimed at a specific audience.

Glider Challenge: Test Your Prototype!

Our plane was the green one in the middle

What did you learn from your test flight (post your 4 Quadrant Feedback notes for each iteration of your testing)?

- We learned that our plane was too light and didn't travel anywhere.

What are your goals for your glider and how did you adjust your design in order to help it better meet them?

- Our goal was to make it travel the farthest, while also making it stay in the air the longest.
- The second time we tested our glider, we added a few more weight.
- This didn't help us, and our glider went straight down.

4) Your Glider Challenge competition day results. How did your glider perform? What would you change if we competed again?

- Ours performed pretty poorly, and it went straight down right when we threw our plane.
- If we could change something, it would probably be to make it a little heavier and to make our wings more sturdy.

Glider Challenge: Design Phase

1) What's the challenge?

- To design a glider that can both stay in the air a long time and can go the longest distance.

2) Brainstorm solutions:
What are the rules of brainstorming? (oxymoron)

-Brainstorming is when you gather ideas about what you want to do.

List your ideas

-Wings
-Sturdy
-Doesn't weigh too much

Sketch at least two of them

3) Specify:
-Criteria
-Constraints (be specific about materials available)

-Our criteria is to build a glider and throw it to see who gets the greatest distance.
-Our constraints are balsa wood, tissue paper, and we can only have a limited amount of balsa wood.

4) Develop Solutions:
-Sketch (with labels)
-Model in CAD

Egg Drop Challenge: Iteration 1

2) Total # of Achievements Earned: 11

3) Post an image of your Egg Drop solution.

4) Justify (list and explain) your Achievemtns. Use images as appropriate. For organization's sake, use the categories provided in the Egg Drop Achievement List.

Brainstorming

-Create a sketch of one possible solution. Include labels.
-Create a sketch of another possible solution. Include labels.
-Create a sketch of a third possible solution. Include labels

My group wrote three possible solutions on a piece of paper. One of them was just an egg with aluminum foil wrapped around it, forming a big ball of foil. The second one was a parachute. You would put the egg in a small dixie cup, then there would be a piece of aluminum foil to make it look like a parachute. Our last solution was just a pillow and we would drop an egg on it.

Material Prep

-Generate a list of materials required for build day.

Material Size:

-Your materials fit inside a printer paper box
-Your materials fit inside a shoe box

Drop Accuracy:

-You hit the butcher paper!
-You hit the Bullseye!

We laid a pillow on the bullseye, then when we dropped the egg, it hit the pillow.

Egg Resilience:

-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)
-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)
-Your egg didn't break in any way! (awarded three times)

5) What designs from your class did well? Based on the achievements you earned, how would you redesign your solution to score better? Be specific (sketches with labeling work well for this).

-Some designs that worked out were just wrapping the egg into something or making a parachute.
-Our solution was great, since the egg didn't break. The only thing wrong was that we didn't earn any achievements in the weight category.

TED Challenge - Part II

A) Summarize the talk. Get to the heart of what makes the issue exciting and noteworthy.

-The video our group chose was 7 ways video games engage the brain. The speaker, Tom Chatfield, explains how people find videogames to be rewarding and how it can make us work harder.
-The video applies to anyone who enjoys playing videogames.

B) Explain the relevance of the subject matter to our class.

-The video relates to our class because our class is Engineering design and designing is a part of making videogames.

C) Explain how a student could get involved in the field in question in the future.

-A student can get involved by taking designing courses or by being an animator.

TED pt I - Ideas worth Spreading?

1) What is the TED organization about?

The TED organization is about sharing ideas with the world. They share ideas about whatever they like, and prepare presentations about them explaining what they are trying to teach.

2) What is the purpose of their website and how does the functionality of their site support that?

The purpose is to bring new ideas and share what they feel about them. The functionality of their site supports it by showing videos about a lot of things and separating them into different categories.

3) As Engineers and Problem Solvers, which topic areas (the choices from the "Show talks related to:" section on the sidebar) are of most interest to us? Justify your answer.

The categories that are the most relevent to our class are the design and technology ones, mainly because our class is Engineering design and we use computers.

4) Based on your previous answer, what are 3 talks (videos) on the site that appear like they would be of most interest to you as an Engineer/Problem Solver? Justify your choices.

1.) Amber Case: We are all cyborgs now
2.) Cynthia Breazeal: The rise of personal robots
3.) Bart Weetjens: How I taught rats to sniff out land mines
These three videos seemed like they were the most interesting out of all the videos I looked through. They teach us about how technology is so advanced now, and how we are able to amazing things that we weren't able to do years ago.

5) Each student will watch a unique video. Claim your video on the following period specific posts: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th. If no one else has claimed your video, leave a comment on that post to call the one you want. If someone else has already claimed the talk, go back and pick another one. Watch the video. Embed the video in your blog post and create a bulletized outline of the key issues presented in the talk.

6) How could you get involved in the field/technology/issue you chose to hear about? What experience/skills/training/education would you need to learn to get involved with this field?

The video I chose was the one about how we are cyborgs now. It doesn't really have an issue, but to be able to talk about it, you would probably need experience in the field of engineering and design. You would need to learn about what goes into making a cyborg and what a cyborg really is.

Reverse Engineering: Mechanicnal Product - Functional Analysis

1. What is the purpose or primary function of the object?

The primary function of a laptop is to use the internet and and to do other things such as listening to music, watching videos, playing games, and typing up things like essays.

2. Make an educated guess as to how this product operates. Use simple machines’ terminology to explain the object’s sequential operation.

The product operates by having some parts inside of a computer that make it able to turn on and work. like a computer chip. You use a keyboard to type, and a touch pad to move the cursor around.

3. Identify the system inputs, intended product function, and outputs. Use power point to create a "black box" graphic like the toothbrush example discussed in class. Save the slide as a .jpg image and post it to answer this question.

4. What mechanical components are visible?

Some visible components are the keyboard, the screen, the mouse, the CD drive, the speakers, and the power button.

5. What is it about this device’s function that you cannot identify, because the mechanical components are hidden from plain view?

Most of the things located on a laptop or computer cannot be seen. The computer chips are inside of the computer, and everything used to make it work is located inside.

Graphic Design: What's Going On In This Design?

-The ad from the magazine is being advertised by Sprint. The ad is showing a new phone that they have come out with.
-To me, I don't think that the ad completely showcases what features are on the phone. It doesn't really tell us any information about what it can do and how it works.
-I think that the ad is easily readible and the size is good for an ad.

Conclusion:
1. What are trends? Why is it important to identify them prior to graphic design?

Trends are what people are into right now. It's important to identify them because as a business owner, you need to know what the public likes in order to sell.

2. How does human nature play a role in how a product is marketed to a specific demographic group?

Some advertisements are marketed to a specific groupp in order to sell a product. Everyone is different so the advertiser has to appeal to that kind of person.

3. How is a potential audience identified?

An audience is identified by polls or charts that are taken by the advertiser. They will ask the public what they are interested in and make a product that most people enjoy.

4. What must you discover about the target audience prior to graphic design?

You must discover what the public likes in order to sell your product. You don't want to sell a product that no one is interested in, because then you will make no money.

Opt In Post #2: The Revolution Will Be Televised

Q - What technologies facilitated the regime change we witnessed in Egypt today? List 3. Describe how each technology came about and how each were used in support of the protest.

In Egypt, there were a lot of things that were going on that I didn't really know about. The things that I know a little knowledge of were how social networking was able to help out the revolution in Egypt. Three things that helped the cause in Egypt include:
1. Facebook
2. Twitter
3. Internet

Q - List each of the items displayed in the image. Make your best guess about how they could be repurposed to support peaceful demonstration in the face of an authoritarian regime.
The items in the image that are being displayed include:
-Jacket- It can be used to show which side you are on
-Flower- Used a a symbol of what you want
-Spray Can- I think it was used to spray walls and show how they felt and express themaelves
-Shoes- Each person was probably assigned there own shoe to show which side they belonged to.
-Lid

Visual Design: Elements and Principles

1)What are the 6 Visual Design Elements we discussed in class?

The 6 visual design elements we discussed in class were line, color, space, texture, form, and shape.

2) What are the 5 Visual Design Principles we discussed in class?

The 5 visual design principles we discussed were balance, rhythm, emphasis, proportion and scale, and unity.

3) Locate five items at home or at school that utilize the elements and principles of design. Post an image of each product. List and explain any visual design elements or principles that are evident in that product.

1.

-The Ipod displays many different elements of design.
-It uses color, space, texture, and shape.
-Ipod comes in many different colors, not just white, so it can appeal to everyone.
-It doesn't take up a lot of space, so you can bring it everywhere you go and can fit anywhere.
-The texture is smooth and can appeal to everyone.
-The shape it comes in makes it easy to fit in your pocket without taking up too much room.

2.

-A car can come in many different colors and it's texture is smooth so it can appeal to different people.
-It is large and will not be able to move everywhere and is not easy to carry around with you.
-It is easy to access since you can just go inside whenever you want.

3.

-A cell phone has many of the same features design wise as the Ipod.
-It has a wide variety of colors, it has different textures, and it comes in a small form so that you can take it anywhere.
-All phones have different features so that not everyone has internet if they don't want or texting if they don't want it.

4.

-A football doesn't have many features that utilize the design process.
-It mostly comes in one color, and always has the same shape, although the shape of the ball allows it to make a spiral when you throw it.
-The texture is mostly bumpy, although it can come in different texture designs.

5.

-Flowers come in a variety of colors and have different shapes and sizes.
-The different colors have balance so that not one color overpowers another one.
-Some flowers look good to the human eye, while others probably won't appeal to anyone.

Project 2.4.1

1)A brief summary of the challenge so that you introduce an uninformed reader to the nature of the effort. List who your partner is.

We are trying to design an object that can fit in the back of a car and can hold at least seven items and is composed of at least six parts. My partner is Zach Parker.

2)Why did you choose the design brief that you chose to work on?

We chose this design brief because we thought it was the most simple to do and the others weren't that interesting.

3) Share insight on steps 1, 2 and 4 of the 12 step PLTW design process.

We found out what the problem was that wee were trying to solve, and then we brainstormed our product. Then we designed our product.

4) Post images/scans of your 3 possible solution sketches. Highlight any important features. Sketches should have a scale listed and a description of which perspective is shown. Call out any key features.

5) Post an image of your decision matrix and explain results.

We found that our second design worked bettter than the other two designs.

6) Model your solution in Inventor and post appropriate images (alt+PrtScn to take a screen shot of the active window. Use Paint to crop your image).

This is me and my partners solution to the problem we were trying to solve.

Opt In Post: Ads

The benefit of hosting an ad on our blogs is that we may be able to make a little bit of money, although it probably wouldn't be that much. The goal of our blogs is to show our opinions on the things we learned, or other things that are occurring. I don't think that ads really help that so it isn't really a good idea to have ads on our blogs, since only the students will be looking at it anyway. Advertisements would make our blogs look a little better design wise, but I don't think they would really help us. I think that you can make money off of ads if someone would click on it, but that wouldn't be too many people. So overall, I don't think that ads are a good idea to put on our blogs.

Content is King

Q.What is a field/hobby/something you have a passion for (surfing, sailing, robotics, painting, etc)?

Some of my favorite hobbies include watching sports, drawing, listening to music, and hanging out with my friends.

Q.What person or organization in that field has used blogging to promote their brand?

There are plenty of sports blogs out there that promote their sport. The same goes for music and plenty of other things.

Q- What is a field you might see yourself blogging about?

A field that I might be able to see myself doing is something about sports because that is somoething that interests me the most.
